MAS Celebrates Recycling Week 2015!

Modern American School

MAS celebrated the second annual Recycling Week, beginning Monday, November 2. The Scientific Outreach Group, a section of the school’s STEM Club, has great ambitions to advance the school-wide Go Green campaign. This event was the group’s first of many school-wide events to increase awareness of not only the GO Green campaign, but of all scientific endeavors of global import.

For the last month, the Scientific Outreach Group has been planning and preparing a series of recycling activities for all grade levels. Kicking off the week-long event, KG students learned about recycling with MAS-produced recycling videos and activities. The students made flowerpots from reused plastic water bottles and planted seeds in their new pots with the help of the Scientific Outreach Group. Elementary School students also received a visit from the group and learned about what they can and cannot recycle. After their interactive lesson, all students went outside to compete in the Recycling Week relay competition, where they used their knowledge to decide if objects could be recycled, all while getting a little exercise. Middle School students also learned about recycling and made their own recycling bins that will stay in their classrooms for the remainder of the year with a proposed challenge: the class that recycles the most before Earth Day will receive the grand prize on this world-wide event. Finally, High School students learned about their own daily waste. The Scientific Outreach Group previously collected the garbage produced by the school in one day and sorted out how much of this garbage could have been recycled. Our Outreach group gave these students one final challenge: if they cut the amount of recyclables they throw away in half by April 1, all science classes will have a celebration on Earth Day.

The Scientific Outreach Group is celebrating the success of this event and is now looking toward the many wonderful activities to come.
