STEM Recycling Day and the Launch of the Big Brother Big Sister Program at MAS

Modern American School

The third annual MAS Recycling Day, hosted by the MAS STEM Club, was a little extra special this year. The day, filled with Earth friendly lessons, activities, competitions, songs, and games was so successful that it inspired a new program: Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Recycling Day was an amazing learning experience for students from grade KG1-12. High School STEM Club members organized events and collaborated with all sections of the school to help teach all of our students important values, like working as a team and taking care of the environment.

For example, in our Elementary School, classes learned about the 3 R’s - Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, and brought reused, recyclable materials to build a class robot. Each class designed their robot, named him/her and wrote a message to the world. The Green Robot made by our grade 4C students has an important message to the world: “My message is to encourage humans to plant more, and to stop cutting plants and trees. Through the process of photosynthesis we get oxygen, and oxygen is one of the elements we need to stay alive. We get paper from trees, so we need to reuse paper and recycle it.” A group of judges had the challenging task of deciding a winner amongst the beautiful projects. Ms. Omaya and Dr. Maher offered a pizza party for all students to celebrate their efforts and their great knowledge.

The success of the High School STEM Club’s efforts and interaction with our little ones exemplifies our vision to nurture our students to become responsible citizens with leadership qualities. This scientific outreach program has inspired our High School to launch a leadership program with an even broader scope: the Big Brother Big Sister Program. This program is to encourage our HS students to role model different academic and social skills to our ES students. They will be helping them in their day-to-day chores in literacy, numeracy, and in many other school-wide activities, such as Thanksgiving, International Day, and many other events that will instill universal values and pride in our students’ cultural identity.
