Student Led Conferences at Elementary School a Huge Success

Modern American School

The Modern American School Elementary Division held student-led conferences this January to increase student critical thinking and metacognition.  Students in grades one through four spoke to their parents about their own learning in carefully constructed conferences, structured under the leadership of elementary school principal Margit Heinrichs.  Students discussed their perceived strengths and opportunities for growth in all subject areas. By taking responsibility for their learning, students learned to evaluate their growth as learners, and to deepen their understanding about themselves. One parent noted, “I really liked the way my child explained what he took in school and I loved the way he speaks in English”. Another stated, “I really liked this idea (Student Led Conference), it means a lot for the parents and their kids as well, it makes the relationship between the school and the parents stronger. Lastly, one parent summed it all up by saying, “the picture of what’s happening in the class became more clear and obvious for me".
